Year 6 Spring term Foundation subjects


Continuing to look at Local History Study – Children will learn about WWII by looking at the effects on the local environment and its people.

To carry out a study over time tracing how several aspects of national history are reflected in the locality.

To study an aspect of history dating from a period beyond 1066 that is significant in the locality. Children will also continue to look at world war II and how it affected Croydon.


We are App developers

Spring 1: This is the second in a sequence of six Year 6 units in which pupils work collaboratively to develop a smartphone or tablet app. Pupils apply computational

thinking to the task of managing a complex project

Spring 2: pupils conduct research into the potential market for their app, using an online survey together with interviews or focus groups. They analyse the data

and information they obtain and create a presentation summarising their findings.


Spring 1: Dance

Children to explore and improvise ideas for dances in different styles, working on their own, with a partner and in a group. PE will be linked to history and each week will focus on  music during different time periods.

Spring 2: Gymnastics

Children will be using as a range of different apparatuses to travel on. This will include the wall equipment as well 

Year 6 Spring term Core subjects


Week 1-3 Talk for writing: Children will verbally learn a story, this will help children to focus on different elements in a story. Next they will write their own story in the same style as the one they have learnt. They will really focus on including their targets in their writing.

Weeks 6-7 Talk for writing (Wolf brother):  

children will engage with a whole-class reading of a novel which links with history (the stone age).

Writing opportunities: description of a setting, poetry, persuasive writing, letter, balanced argument, stone age based stories, diary entries and many more.


Spring 1 Light

In this unit we will be looking at:

  • Reflection
  • Refraction
  • How light travels
  • How we see
  • How we see colour
  • Shadows

Soring 2: electricity

Revisiting electricity topic for year 4

  • Symbols for circuits
  • How components work in a circuit
  • How different variables affect components in a circuit


In maths we will be covering a range of topics this term. Children will be given opportunities to consolidate their learning from Year 5 and build upon this to achieve the Year 6 objectives.

These are the topics we will be covering this term:

  1. Properties for 2d and 3d shapes
  2. Reading, writing and ordering decimal numbers
  3. Formal written methods for all 4 operations (Column addition & subtraction, long multiplication & long division.)
  4. Solving problems & reasoning skills
  5. Time
  6. Factors and multiples
  7. Fractions
  8. Angles

This term will consist of a lot of revision in order to prepare the children for the SATS
